Latest VPN changes

Good news: We are currently in the process of completely overhauling our VPN infrastructure. That means for you: IPv6 support, higher speeds and WireGuard.

Very important: To avoid problems after our updates, you must make sure that your operating system and VPN software is up to date. Unfortunately, problems can occur with very outdated software.

IPv6 Support

Previously in our data centers IPv6 was often not available, which is why we could not support IPv6 earlier. However more and more Internet providers are now enabling IPv6 for their customers or are even offering IPv4 with restrictions (Dual-Stack Lite). We can now get IPv6 for almost all servers. That means we can now gradually switch to IPv6.

What benefit do you get out of it?

Previously you had to disable IPv6 in your router or computer to prevent IP leaks when connecting to IPv6 servers. This is no longer necessary. If possible we will connect via IPv6 now, otherwise we will block IPv6 and connect via IPv4. Your IP address is now secure, no matter if IPv4 or IPv6!

Do I have to do something?

If you had previously disabled IPv6 to avoid IP leaks, you should now enable IPv6 again. It is the future!

Below you will find information on how to re-enable IPv6 for Windows, Mac OS and Linux, if you have previously used our deactivation instructions:

Windows:

Download this small program and run it. Afterwards you only have to restart your computer.

Mac OS:

Enter the following commands in Terminal:

networksetup -setv6automatic Wi-Fi

networksetup -setv6automatic Ethernet

networksetup -setv6automatic “Thunderbolt Ethernet”

networksetup -setv6automatic “iPhone USB”

Linux:

Enter the following commands in Terminal:

sudo vi /etc/sysctl.conf

Remove the following lines from the file:

net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1

net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1

net.ipv6.conf.lo.disable_ipv6 = 1

net.ipv6.conf.tun0.disable_ipv6 = 1

Higher Speeds

In the course of optimizing our infrastructure, we have also been able to upgrade some servers. Therefore we can now offer even faster connections for some locations.

WireGuard

WireGuard is still relatively new and currently enjoys great popularity. This is not without reason: While OpenVPN and IPSec are of course still secure, they have grown historically over the years. As WireGuard is built from scratch with the latest technologies and security features, it is not only very secure, it is also much more powerful and therefore faster than the traditional protocols.

Also very positive: WireGuard is available for almost every system.

Unfortunately, WireGuard will not be available immediately, but we are paving the way for this so that we can offer WireGuard as soon as possible.
